Heather literally lived in a tent under a bridge and rummaged for food from dumpsters. She had a history of being abused, prior drug use, and had no health insurance. When she found out she was pregnant she was referred to Mother’s Refuge and moved in that very day.
During her stay in our home she was able to remain drug free, severed ties with her abuser, and learned skills to break the cycles of abuse and addiction. We assisted her in obtaining health insurance and health care providers. She went back to school and obtained her GED. She also obtained employment and saved money. She passed her driver’s license test and bought a car. Most importantly she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, learned proper parenting skills, and became a very nurturing mother.
Heather graduated our residential program and moved into her own home with her son. During her graduation party she commented that she didn’t know where she would be without Mother’s Refuge! She continues to participate in our Aftercare Program, has a job, maintains her own apartment, takes great care of her son, and is a part of our forever family.
