“Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference. The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. The greatest danger to our future is apathy.” - Jane Goodall

Our lives are enriched by our association with animals – from the pets who share our homes to the awe-inspiring creatures of the deep sea. We rely on animals for companionship, sustenance, beauty, inspiration, protection, and to maintain the natural balance in our ecosystems. We share this planet with countless species, and it’s our duty to protect them, and their home – the only home we have, and foster the growing relationships between species.

Throughout recorded history and even today, we partner with animals to help us accomplish tasks we can’t conquer on our own. Animals lend their strength to help us plow the ground so we can cultivate crops to feed our families. They use their keen reflexes to keep our homes, barns, and food storage areas free of vermin. They employ their acute sense of smell to help us find missing persons, alert us to potential hazards, and identify diseases with higher accuracy than man-made machines. Highly-trained service animals can restore a sense of independence to individuals with injuries, health concerns, or other disabilities.

Because animals can’t speak for themselves, it is up to us to speak for them, in gratitude for all of the ways they support and serve us. Being good stewards of the animals in our care means raising awareness for rescue efforts, and supporting wildlife rehabilitation benefits the health of our planet, preserving it for generations to come. Preservation efforts can even bring species back from the brink of extinction, such as the success story of the iconic Bald Eagle, whose population is now increasing with 71,400 new nesting pairs discovered in the past decade from a low of 417.
